The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is directed, co-produced and stars Ben Stiller as Walter Mitty. It is the second film adaption of James Thurber’s short story. Mitty is the negative asset manager of Life Magazine which is transitioning to online. The story traces the journey of Mitty trying to find Sean O’Connell, the photographer, whose negative 25 has gone missing.

What we like
- How the dreams of Walter Mitty come to life through explosive characters and imagery
- The incredible cinematography of the journey which takes us to Greenland, Iceland, Himalayas and Afghanistan. We experience it through amazing skateboarding feats, a volcano eruption, mountain top views and a cake!
Mind experience
- Change is one of the major themes within the movie that stands out to us
- Change is what Mitty dreams of. We can have so many dreams about life but if we don’t take action to make them happen it will remain simply, a dream. Mitty found courage through negative 25 to embrace that which he was yearning. Perhaps we should have a focus that pulls us to our dreams, take courage and do it. Sometimes it is something small that leads us to a big adventure
- Another change is through the corporate world of Life magazine going online. There, people invested their time and literally their life in an organisation. With the change some are considered no longer “vital”. In so many ways we need to prepare ourselves for any changes, accepting that change is inevitable and in preparing we might have alternatives to choose from. At the very least, embrace the change and move on. Holding on to the past as a negative experience does not serve any purpose in the present
To think about
- Walter Mitty reading Life magazines motto:
To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life. - Cheryl: Life is about courage and going into the unknown.
