A Ted talk given by Cameron Russell an American model who has been in the industry for 10 years.  Cameron gives a candid talk about the power of image and gives us information that she finds uncomfortable to share.  She feels privileged to be the winner of a genetic and legacy lottery but also points out those on the opposite scale who pay the price.

What we like

  • Cameron takes us intelligently and powerfully through different information and visuals of the simple message “Image is powerful.  But also image is superficial.”
  • Questions that she is often asked are answered with an uncomfortable truth of the side of the industry that are not known or ignored

Mind experience

  • Some might question why someone with so much privilege should even be speaking in this manner.  Cameron attempts to give a balanced look at the industry offering her opinion using her experience.  The key to us, is that she is grateful but at the same time uncomfortable about being the biggest beneficiary of gender and racial oppression.  This is one brave lady to attempt this topic from the beneficiary side

To think about

  • In 2011 over 120,000 black and Latino kids between 14 and 18 were stopped.  There are only 177,000 in New York
  • 53% of 13 year old American girls are unhappy with their bodies, this grows to 78% by the time they are 17 (Maine, 2011)
