This movie is based on a true story of two men who compete in the 1924 Olympics.  Eric Liddell who is a devout Scottish Christian who’s calling is for missionary work and struggles to understand his gift of running.  Finally he runs for the glory of God.  Harold Abrahams struggles with prejudice he encounters as an English Jew, he runs to overcome this and for glory.  Although this movie does focus on the two main characters there is a mixture of rich personalities which support the main story line.

Mind Stars – Ben Cross, Ian Charleson, Nigel Havers, Cheryl Campbell

What we like

  • The power of mind set, many of the characters in the film receive exactly what they ask of themselves
  • Creative thinking allowed for alternatives where a compromise could otherwise not be made

Mind Experience

  • It is easy to compare yourself to one of the characters in the movie.  Are you the one striving for gold?  The person who is happy to be part of it all?  The coach?  What is the role that you favour in playing out in your life?

To think about

  • Harold Abrahams:  If I can’t win, I won’t run!
Sybil Gordon:  If you don’t run, you can’t win.

James Allen – mind’s garden

“A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind. “

Leonardo da Vinci – transform

“The men of experiment are like the ant; they only collect and use. But the bee gathers its materials from the flowers of the garden and of the field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own.”
