The Railway Man is based on a true story from the memoirs of Eric Lomax. Eric Lomax was a British officer in World War II captured and sent to a Japanese POW camp and forced to work on the Thai-Burma Railway. The movie moves from the present to the past and finally reconciles the two together. An astonishing story of love, reconciliation and forgiveness. Outstanding performances by Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and the supporting cast.

What we like

  • The movie shows us the meaning of unconditional love and sacrifice on so many levels
  • Interwoven through this moving piece we are shown that through love we can move past suffering

Soul experience

  • For most we understand the concept of unconditional love when displayed in our close relationships, partner to partner, parent to child, friend to friend.  All of this is working with the premise that love is reciprocated.   It feels safe, it feels natural.  Even with safety we can still struggle with this concept.  How would we be showing unconditional love or to begin with just love to some one that doesn’t return love, rejects it or even returns it with hatred?  Could you even entertain the thought of doing this?  If love is limitless, is there a reason to hold our love for only those that we think deserve it.  In giving love do we lose it or do we strengthen what we have? When you are challenged with sharing your love see if you can move through your resistance and let love guide you no matter what the situation

To reflect on

  • Eric Lomax: “I have suffered much. But I know you have suffered too. And you mean everything to me. Sometimes the hating has to stop.”
