This RSA Animate shows an adaption of Daniel Pink’s talk on motivation and how several studies showed that motivation and results isn’t always centred on monetary rewards.

What we like

  • The animation gives us the facts visually and playfully leads us through the discovery of motivation
  • This theory can be applied to so many situations not only the work place

Mind experience

  • There seems to be a strong emergence of people searching for purpose driven careers. For many a reason to stay with a company and contribute to the organisation has gone past just the monetary reward. Of course, money is still a focus for all the practical reasons. Yet once this need is fulfilled there is a yearning for more in life. And if it isn’t found in the current work place, people simply move on.
  • What often gets lost is that purpose can be found in any situation or any work place given the right focus or opportunity. You don’t need to start a foundation, feed the world or join green peace, as noble as it might seem. Rather than wait for your opportunity why not search for yours in your current situation? If there isn’t any visible opportunities why not suggest one yourself, start something new or volunteer?

To think about

  • If you don’t pay people enough they won’t be motivated… But the best use of money as a motivator is to pay people enough to take the issue of money off the table… So that they are not thinking about money they are thinking about work…
  • Three factors that science shows leads to better performance and personal satisfaction…Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose…
